In a strategic move to advance the field of robotics and physical AI, South Korea’s LG Innotek has teamed up with Japan’s TDK. This collaboration aims to create cutting-edge vision and tactile sensing modules, leveraging LG’s prowess in optical and precision engineering alongside TDK’s expertise in sensor technology. The partnership signifies a significant step towards enhancing robotic capabilities by integrating advanced sensing technologies.
The first major project under this alliance is the development of a vision sensing module, slated for release in 2027. This module will incorporate an inertial sensor and is designed to blend visual, motion, direction, and sound data. Such integration is expected to provide robots with improved environmental awareness and responsiveness, while also minimizing the image distortion typically caused by movement.
In parallel, the two companies are working on a tactile sensing module that mimics the sensitivity of human skin. This module will enable robots to perceive touch and pressure across their hands, arms, and bodies, thereby enhancing their interaction capabilities. The tactile module is also projected to be ready by 2027, aligning with the timeline for the vision sensing module.
LG Innotek anticipates that this partnership will bolster its foothold in the rapidly growing robotics market. By expanding its suite of AI sensing technologies, which already includes cameras, lidar, radar, and tactile sensors, LG Innotek aims to position itself as a leader in the industry.
