SK Eternix, a key player in the renewable energy sector under South Korea’s SK Group, has witnessed a remarkable surge in its stock value, climbing over 114% in the past month. This rise in shares is largely attributed to growing investor optimism surrounding the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, which is anticipated to significantly boost the demand for renewable energy sources. On Friday, the company’s shares closed at 80,900 won, equivalent to US$55.35, representing an impressive 114.6% increase from the previous month. In stark contrast, during the same time frame, the Kospi index, a benchmark for the South Korean stock market, dropped by 20.9%, and SK hynix, SK Group’s prominent semiconductor division, saw a decline of 31.2%.

The upward momentum of SK Eternix’s stock accelerated notably over the past week, gaining 44.9% in just five trading sessions. This surge was bolstered by substantial buying from institutional investors, who acquired a net 106.8 billion won worth of shares, alongside foreign investors who purchased a net 79 billion won. Analysts point to the anticipated growth in AI data centers, known for their substantial electricity requirements, as a primary driver of long-term renewable energy demand, which in turn has fueled the strong performance of SK Eternix’s stock.

Investor confidence is further reinforced by the South Korean government’s continuous initiatives to expand the nation’s clean energy capabilities. In June, the government projected that the emergence of major industrial projects, including AI data centers and semiconductor manufacturing clusters, would lead to an increase in electricity demand by an additional 39.7 gigawatts. Furthermore, the government has reiterated its commitment to enhancing South Korea’s renewable energy capacity to 100 gigawatts by the year 2030.

Adding to the positive sentiment, SK Eternix’s strategic plans include a significant 2 trillion won renewable energy joint venture with global private equity giant KKR. This partnership is expected to be a catalyst for the company’s growth within the clean energy sector, further aligning with investor expectations and supporting the surge in its stock performance.
